The Best Outdoor Saunas in Fife

Fife's coastline has quietly become one of the best places in Scotland to find an outdoor sauna. From the dunes at Elie to the beaches of St Andrews and Kingsbarns, here are eight worth booking.

The Best Outdoor Saunas in Fife

Fife's coastline has quietly become one of the best places in Scotland - possibly the UK - to find an outdoor sauna. The East Neuk in particular has a concentration of wood-fired, off-grid sauna operations that would be remarkable anywhere. Add St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Cupar, and you have a region that punches well above its weight.

Here are the outdoor saunas in Fife worth booking.

    Elie Seaside Sauna

The original. Two off-grid wood-fired saunas on the dunes at Elie Harbour and rated number one by both The Times and The Telegraph. This is the spot that put Scottish seaside saunas on the map. If you're new to Fife's sauna scene, start here. Deservedly one of the most talked-about outdoor sauna experiences in the UK.

    Wild Scottish Sauna, Elie

Tucked into the dunes at Shell Bay, just outside Elie, this hidden beach has gentle surf and sunset views. A quieter, more secluded alternative to Elie Seaside Sauna on the same stretch of coastline. Good for beginners and well worth seeking out.

    Cellardyke Seaside Sauna

An off-grid horsebox sauna beside Cellardyke Tidal Pool in the East Neuk has floor-to-ceiling glass facing the Isle of May. Watch for dolphins between rounds. One of the most visually striking sauna settings in Scotland, and quietly one of the best kept secrets on the Fife coast.

    Largo Castaway Sauna

On the Fife Coastal Path at Lower Largo, overlooking Largo Bay. Men's, women's and guided whisking sessions. This is one of the few Fife saunas offering a full ceremonial sauna programme including traditional whisking techniques. Sea dips between rounds. Opened February 2025 and already firmly on the list.

    Wild Scottish Sauna, St Andrews

On West Sands Beach, St Andrews you'll find a wood-fired sauna for up to twelve on one of Scotland's most iconic stretches of coastline. The beach that inspired Chariots of Fire, and now home to one of Fife's most dramatic sauna settings. Consistently popular, so book ahead.

    St Andrews Seaside Sauna

On the Fife Coastal Path between East Sands and the sea, a short walk from St Andrews town centre. Wood-fired, fully accessible, with yoga on site. A more considered, wellness-led offering than a standard sauna session that's well worth the visit for the combination of location, accessibility and programme.

    Wild Scottish Sauna, Kingsbarns

Wide-open beach, vast North Sea skies, wood-fired sauna for up to twelve. Kingsbarns is one of Fife's most unspoiled stretches of coastline. It's less visited than St Andrews but arguably more atmospheric. The sense of space here is unlike anything else on the Fife coast.

    Wild Scottish Sauna, Eden Springs

The inland option - a wood-fired sauna at Eden Springs Country Park near Cupar, with loch views and jetty cold dips rather than sea swimming. Café on site. Thistle Award shortlisted. Worth including for anyone exploring central Fife or looking for something slightly off the coastal trail.

    Planning Your Fife Sauna Trip

The East Neuk is the natural base with Elie, Cellardyke and Largo within a short drive of each other, as well as St Andrews and Kingsbarns up the coast. Most sessions need to be booked in advance; walk-ins are rarely available at the popular sites, particularly in summer.

The Fife Coastal Path connects many of these locations, making it possible to combine a coastal walk with a sauna session, one of the better ways to spend a day in this part of Scotland.
